What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. The priority is to ensure people with a disability continue to get the support they need.

When does the NDIS come to the Illawarra?

The NDIS will become available in the Illawarra Shoalhaven district from July 2017.

How will the NDIS help me?

This is the start of a lifelong relationship between you and the NDIS. It uses goal-based planning to consider your strengths. It also aims to maximise your choices and independence.

How do I apply for the NDIS?

A Participant Statement needs to be lodged before your initial planning appointment. This Statements helps you to identify your needs, goals and current supports

What sort of supports will the NDIS offer and how will this help myself and my family?

There are a range of supports that are available for individuals. The supports differs in the way it is packaged as an individual program that is tailored to that person’s disability.  As an example for some of the supports:

  • Support workers helping with the preparation of meals;
  • Transport assistance with getting to medical appointments;
  • Help with accessing community resources such as sport and recreation;
  • Support with living independently (cooking, cleaning, shopping etc)
  • Medical aids

The above is just an example of some of the supports which could be available.

The key is to provide a detailed participant statement with a supporting budget.
